Getting Started with Aquaponics

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics takes the concept of hydroponic farming growing plants with out soil. Growing plants in a nutrient rich water medium, the plants get the exact nutrients it needs to grow to its full potential using raised fish, in a single integrated system.  The waste from the fish provides an organic food source for the growing plants, which eliminates the need for chemical nutrient additives.
Aquaponics combines the benefits of the two disciplines while eliminating the drawbacks of each.  It can produce twenty times the yield of soil farming per square foot while using a small fraction of the water.  Aquaponic farming can be done anywhere, and eliminates many of the chores of a traditional garden.  It is the perfect option for a DIY gardener looking to grow healthy and sustainable vegetables and fish.
In the long term, aquaponic systems will produce a higher yield with less maintenance.  They only require inexpensive fish food instead of chemical nutrients, and are therefore more organic.  On the other hand, hydroponic systems can be set up quickly and easily, unlike aquaponic systems that can take 3-6 months to get going.   Please contact us for information about either of this farming techniques!
