Waiahole Nursery Field Trip FAQ's

What should my students wear?
Students will be outside for the majority of the trip. We recommend close-toed shoes, clothing that can get a little dirty, and a hat and sunscreen to protect them from the elements. We are on the rainy side of the island, so rain jackets are also a good idea!
What do students need to bring?
Students should leave all valuables at home. We do have space to store extra bags and lunches during your trip. Water bottles are welcome.
Where should we meet?
Buses and cars can park in the gravel parking lot outside the nursery gates. One of our staff will meet you in the parking lot or on the bistro deck behind the gift shop.
How long will a field trip take?
Our field trips are designed to take 3 hours (including a 30 minute lunch break). Please contact us to schedule a custom field trip if your group would like to stay for a different amount of time.
Do we need to bring a lunch?
Our field trips include a 30-minute lunch break. We will provide a safe place to keep any bag lunches your students bring. You and your students can also sign up to buy lunch from our bistro. Please pre-order your lunches through our website or call prior to visiting so we can make sure to prepare enough food for you. Teachers are responsible for supervising their class during lunch.
How many students can you accommodate?
**PANDEMIC** Booking groups of 5.

We generally host groups of 30-35 (one or two classes plus 2 chaperones). Students may be split up into 2 or 3 groups to do the farm tour and other activities while on-site. Additional chaperones $6/e.a.
How much does it cost?
Individual Rate: $12/student.
Group Rate: $9/student (including Teachers & aides) + $6.00/adult chaperone
Funding assistance is available through Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

Where are you located?
Waiahole Nursery & Garden Center is located at 48-190 Kamehameha Hwy Kaneohe, HI 96744. We are right across from Waiahole Beach Park and Chinaman’s Hat.
What can teachers do to prepare students for the trip?
Visit the Educational Resources page on our website for videos and other resources to introduce your students to aquaponics.
You might also want to have your students pre-grouped for when we split up during activities and tours. A typical class will be split into 2 or 3 groups for portions of the trip.
Does your site have insurance for ag tours?
Yes, our site is fully insured for tours and field trips through First Insurance of Hawaii.

Who leads the farm tour & activities?
Field trips are hosted by master-level teachers and staff with advanced college degrees. Some of our younger volunteers may also assist.

What types of facilities do you have?
We have 3 well maintained bathrooms with hand washing facilities. We have a bistro with picnic tables and awnings and other picnic tables with umbrellas. There is also a shaded grass area to accommodate larger groups in one location.

When are field trips offered?
Field trips can be scheduled Monday through Friday. The Nursery is open year-round.
How do I schedule a field trip for my class?
Please fill out a registration form. Once you have filled out the form (including desired date(s)), one of our friendly staff will contact you to complete registration and customize your field trip package.
